Consuming Kids part 1 of 7
Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children’s advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. Consuming Kids pushes back against the wholesale commercialization of childhood, raising urgent questions about the ethics of children’s marketing and its impact on the health and well-being of kids. Featuring: Dan Acuff | Enola Aird | Michael Brody | Nancy Carlsson-Paige | Josh Golin | Allen Kanner | Velma lapoint | Diane Levin | Susan Linn | Robert Reiher | Michael Rich | Gary Ruskin | Nick Russell | Juliet Schor | Betsy Taylor | David Walsh

Here are two simple alternatives: Parents can turn off the TV and Public TV has some excellent children’s shows.

I have a little sister who freaks out whenever she sees an advertisement for a toy she wants on t.v. It drives me crazy! I try not to watch too much television anymore. I’ve noticed that the volume increases everytime there’s a comercial break. Sometimes I just want to rip that idiot box from the wall and send it down a three story building.

The issue is not marketing. Marketing is merely a byproduct of our trading systems. The illusion of scarcity, poorly built products designed purposely not to last, even money itself, printed upon a meaningless slip of paper, given to many by a few who will benefit off its global grasp. The world is in debt. But ask yourself to what? The solution, is a world without money. A world where our technology replaces the need to enslave the globe. We are ready. Will you help?

part 7 of the doc speaks about that, how can parents help with ads in schools and on the streets?

Excellent documentary. We’ve been brainwashed by advertising for decades, and many of us aren’t even aware of it. Asleep in the Matrix.

We all consume products whether those products are commodified or not. So why rile against consuming rather then plain commodififcation?

and your point…? I think they were using it as ‘clip art’ to emphasize a point rather than as a scientific proof of anything.

It is clear that our children need more media options that redirect their gaze to authentic, non-commercialized play. Little Creatures makes live action films about children’s imaginative and mysterious journeys that take place outdoors, without any reference to commercial kids’ culture. Hope you and your 4-10 year old kids can take a look at our films!

The ad where the child is screaming on the floor is actually an ad for condoms, warning about what happens with unplanned pregnancies and the like.
February 1st, 2010 at 11:07 pm
I think this is ALL HYPE. The Media is not some evil monster that is made to “consume kids”, and corporations are not out to “get kids”.
There is a thing called consumer responsibility and if the consumer is a minor then it comes down to parental responsibility.
I usually disagree with the MEF, because they expect us as Americans to give up our most valued freedom.
Media conglomerates have and should have the right to express themselves.

They both need to be addressed. Schools need to be better funded to stop the need of these advertisements, and (I don’t think) companies should even be allowed to advertise their shit in schools unless (INDEPENDENT) research confirms it is healthy. Industries are permitted by the gov’t to care less and less about our health. As a result, they couldn’t care less. If we (not literally you and me) don’t stop them from trying to kill everyone, no one will. And they will be allowed to.
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:11 am
Once again, this is assuming that we have the power to eliminate the cause. We don’t. We currently don’t have the power to change how the schools are funded. Does that mean no one is working on it? No. It means we’ll have more success handling the things we can actually handle at this point.

Yes. And, as I have been saying forever now, the first amendment does not give ANYONE complete freedom of anything. It’s why, though we have freedom of religion, we’re not allowed to perform human sacrifices or withhold someone from medical attention. Or why, though we’re allowed to assemble, it can’t be out of control. Or why, though we are allowed free speech, it cannot endanger or harass others.
The actual content matters how?
February 2nd, 2010 at 1:17 am
So what does freedom of expression include? The protected right for anyone to do whatever the fuck they want?
And… if it isn’t illegal, why would it be considered fraud? Or even pursued legally at all? Have you thought this out? The limitations are set so persons are not harmed because of malpractices. If these limitations are lifted, why would the gov’t even care anymore?
February 2nd, 2010 at 1:58 am
Ah, well I can just call you backward for thinking this. You’re fine endangering persons lives on a large scale (’cause, y’know, that’s what that would do) because… I don’t know why you’re so afraid to have companies be correct in what they are saying.
Do you work in the marketing industry?
I bet that either you don’t live in America or you really don’t like living here. Unfortunately, one;’s rights end where another’s begin. This applies to companies as well.
